Doctor Mike on Diets: Ketogenic Diet | Diet Review

Hey guys! I am back with the next installment of my diet review series. This week I am covering the incredibly popular ketogenic diet. Within the last year or two, the keto diet has soared in popularity and I can understand why. It is a simple diet where counting calories isn’t important (who wants to count calories) and you get to eat a bunch of really delicious foods.

If you are curious, the name of the diet comes from the ketone bodies produced within your body as a result of switching your body to fuel itself through fats instead of carbs. This is also referred to as a state of ketosis.

I know many of you want to lose weight and there are tons of videos on weight loss out there. But I want to give you an honest doctor’s take on the keto diet, which is essentially a high fat low carb diet. Its claim to fame is that helps to burn body fat for energy, therefore helping you lose weight quickly. But is fast weight loss even healthy? + Is this the best weight loss diet?

Anyway, I could go into more detail covering the smallest intricacies of the diet but I did not want to weigh down the video, both literally and figuratively. Please let me know if this is too little, too much, or just the right amount of information about intermittent fasting.

Also, I want you to remember that diets are not all about weight loss but more importantly about eating healthy. So let’s get started with the Keto diet explained / Ketogenic diet explained diet review!

I sincerely hope you enjoy, and definitely let me know if you want more videos like this by giving it a like and a share.

  1. The “typical American diet”,assuming you mean what most Americans eat on a regular basis, is not very healthy or balanced. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have ample carbs, but having most of your calories coming from one macronutrient does not seem ideal. And no, I am not on the Keto diet

  2. Friends: Getting Ice cream.
You: Having Keto friendly ice cream.

    Friends: Cookies and cream milkshake.
You: Keto Cookies and Cream milkshake.

  3. If you eat carbs once in a while, let’s say once a month and the rest of the time you eat the keto way, is it ok ? Or does eating an ice cream completely break the cetosis state and you have to wait a long time to get back in the cetosis state ?

  4. Who tf actually getting Ice cream after graduation? Vodka and "booga suga" have ZERO net carbs. Clearly the better choice

  5. Honestly I just eat in a caloric deficit. As long as you do that ur good and make sure u eat good nutrients

  6. i just dont like how much saturated fat i saw in keto recipes. or the lack of distingushing how much was saturated or unsaturated/ polyunsaturated

  7. Hi Doctor,

    Great video.

I think there has been a lot more information about keto that’s been released in these past 3 years. Is it possible for you to revisit keto as another video idea? Some things I’ve been researching revolve around the topic of the surge of LDL cholesterol in the blood when under keto diet but that not being as bad as it seems.

  8. I just wanna express my gratitude to Dr Alaho Olu on YouTube for curing my HSV 1&2. God will bless you

  9. Doing a healthy keto lifestyle plus intermittent fasting saved me from acne. I was suffering through terrible acne and that alone cured it

  10. Been doing it for years. It’s tough.

I feel more feral. More animalistic. Sharper intellectually.

Strange obsessive behaviors. Colleague brought in banana bread – I followed it through the office while he carried it. He looked at me, "Do you want some?" I could not eat it.

Even I couldn’t understand why I got that way.

  11. Just joined Millionaire Society. Looking for someone that would like to build a business together.

  12. Love this! Very educational and would love more diet review videos. It’ll help keep everyone informed and debunk a lot of those myths. Safe to say I will probably never do the keto diet, I love pasta too much 😂😋

  13. Hey doc, If you want some of the research out there on keto and carnivore diets you should check out Dr. Ken Berry’s page on YouTube. He lists his source material and studies that he has found on the keto and carnivore diets. He also eats the diet regularly so it is sustainable. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which was my reasoning for researching the diet and my numbers are looking great so far. I’ve been on it about 4 months with moderate weight loss. I have an appointment with my doc for labs next week to check the a1c and see if that has reversed.

  14. KETO is good to do bi-monthly is you want to stick to it for long term.

I started it like that and lost a lot of weight, now i am not doing it full anymore, but i keep myself away from sugar and still eat low-carbs as much as i can.

  15. I was pretty happy that I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks, and that even after getting off the keto diet, I maintained that weight for a week or so… but I still eventually got back to my original weight. I’ve considered going back on it but I don’t feel right about sticking with a keto diet permanently, especially since I’ve heard many times that it’s really only ideal for a short term weight loss… although I never could understand wanting to get to a certain weight or size temporarily- unless of course it’s for martial arts competitions and acting roles and such.

  16. One thing he is incorrect about in this video is saying people have the inability to have carbs. While most of the time this is true, having high carb days are necessary especially if you are on keto for weight loss. You will leave ketosis for 1-2 days, but the next day when you go back to fats, you will enter right back into ketosis. This is what fat adaption is. So if you go out with friend for ice cream every few weeks, you aren’t hurting your keto diet.

  17. Doctor, can we have your opinion also on the pure carnivore version of keto (aka carnivore diet) which seems very popular at the moment. And maybe try it?

  18. Your wrong on it not being sustainable. It is. A milkshake doesn’t make the diet not sustainable. It’s all in the mind.

  19. From my own experience, don’t start the ketogenic diet. It’s just so hard on the body and outright dangerous. Listen to your doctors. I tried the Agoge diet and I lost so much of that stubborn belly fat.

  20. Keto has changed my life. Lost weight. Feel great. And the ups and downs of my bipolar disorder seem to have blunted very noticeably. I feel more consistent than I ever have.
But you gotta make sure you’re getting your micros.
But also, I agree that it’s probably not for everybody

  21. being Celiac I had to give up so much food that I love anyway. My wife is a Type 1 Diabetic and had a harder time when she tried Keto.

  22. You don’t really have a better diet to offer your patients though. Low calorie diets lower your metabolism.
